There is a lot of talk in trauma-responsive schools that we are shifting from punishment vs. discipline - but what does that mean, and how do we do that in a way that still maintains high expectations and accountability for students and staff? If you've ever asked yourself this question, this session is for you! During this session, we will identify common classroom behaviors and move our practices from threat, isolation, and shame to promoting safety, dignity, and belonging in four steps. This is a beginner's session.
We will Unpack our American grand experiment on punishment and how it is ineffective and perpetuates trauma-inducing environments. If we want to stop losing kids, this is the biggest mindset shift needed to propel us forward in a trauma-informed school and community. This session will teach us how to create a shared language around punishment versus discipline. Participants will walk through several activities designed to be taken back to staff to shift paradigms and create the needed energy to transform where we currently are to where we want to go. This is an experiential and emotionally active session!
